The V-data Timecode Reader Model TCR decodes IRIG-B timecode and displays the time on the PC screen. It also allows the PC clock to be synchronized with IRIG-B time and shows the millisecond error between the PC clock and the incoming IRIG-B at any moment. The TCR is optimized for use with the V-data TCG but will also work with generic sources of IRIG-B at nominal 3V peak-peak level. There is a BNC connector for IRIG-B, a DB9M connector for the TCG, and a USB connector for the PC. The latest software version is available for free download below under software. Requires XP, Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 Operating System and a USB port. USB drivers for TCR hardware can be downloaded from FTDI's website: Windows 32/64 bit D2XX drivers.

It has recently come to our attention that some early GARMIN GPS-18x Model GPS receivers used as external or internal receivers for the TCG have firmware defects that may result in IRIG-B timing which is 1 second late. If you think that your TCG may be affected, you can send it back to V-data for a receiver firmware upgrade, or you can easily upgrade the receiver yourself using the GARMIN WebUpdater software. First, download WebUpdater from GARMIN.com. Then plug your serial port (or USB serial adapter) into the COM port of the TCG. Your TCG must have an internal or external GPS receiver installed. Power up the TCG and run WebUpdater and click on Find Device. It will detect and identify your receiver and lead you through the firmware upgrade to the latest version. You will have a chance to cancel the upgrade if your firmware is already up to date. WebUpdater may not find your receiver on the first try. If your receiver is identified as a GPS 18LVC instead of a GPS 18xLVC, it will not have the 1 second error but it is still a good idea to update to the latest firmware version. You may also want to consider upgrading the GPS 18 to a GPS 18x which is considerably more sensitive and will acquire faster. The cost of the upgrade is $175 including return shipping from V-data. It is not known at present if GPS-17x external receivers are susceptible to the 1 second error, but it would be advisable to update the firmware for those receivers as well.
